Battery recycling extends ECA's green commitment

Monday, July 18, 2011

As part of its corporate environmental sustainability efforts, Education Corporation of America (ECA) has started recycling used, rechargeable batteries and old cell phones through Call2Recycle, a nonprofit organization which promotes recycling of nickel–cadmium (Ni–Cd) rechargeable batteries.

According to Kyle Crider, ECA's Manager for Environmental Operations, the step makes sense on a number of levels. "ECA is joining thousands of businesses across the country that include battery recycling in initiatives toward a cleaner environment and healthier, safer communities."

Rechargeable batteries are a long lasting, eco–friendly power source for many electronic devices, including laptop computers, cell phones, portable scanners and printers, power tools and PDAs. "We can now recycle the rechargeable batteries used in our corporate offices and campuses every day, preventing the used products from entering the solid waste stream," Crider continued.

Since 1994, more than 50 million pounds of rechargeable batteries have been collected through Call2Recycle. The organization upholds strict third–party standards for environmental safety and social responsibility.

Education Corporation of America (ECA) is a Birmingham, Ala.–based company that owns and operates career colleges in 24 cities including Virginia College, Golf Academy of America, Ecotech Institute and online programs of Virginia College.
