Ecotech Institute's Chris Gorrie addresses climate change, need for educated workforce

On July 30, Ecotech Institute President Chris Gorrie spoke at an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Action event, highlighting the importance of the EPA's Clean Power Plan. This plan, which President Obama and the EPA just released, takes a historic step in the fight against climate change. Its goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 32 percent in the next 15 years.

During the event, Gorrie addressed the importance of investing in and building infrastructure for renewable energy now, before the effects of climate change become even more expensive.

Some highlights of Gorrie's address include:

  • Estimates indicate we will see up to $93 billion in public health benefits alone by 2030.
  • The EPA projects that the compliance costs for this rule would be between $7.3 billion and $8.8 billion annually by 2030.
  • Legislation will reduce electricity consumption and energy efficiency incentives will offset increased electricity prices.

The EPA's Clean Power Plan legislation will, in part, promote the growth of the renewable energy industry, making it vital to have an educated workforce. Ecotech Institute aims to contribute to that workforce by providing hands-on training in alternative energy associate's degree programs.
